Totally unplanned, and by dint of one of those random choices we all make to left rather than right, I wound up at George Square in Glasgow perfectly times to watch the short service ahead of the wreath laying to commemorate the begining of WWI. Standing behind the barriers, with a great view of the big screen, I could hear the bands if not the voices and joined with hundreds of others in keeping the 2 min silence which is pretty much palpable (a few glowers at those who didnt from all who did!) Anyone who fails to shed the odd tear during Nimrod played by a brass band must be very rugged... it was remarkably moving. And then automatically front row to watch the march past of bands: service personnel, British Legion and veterans. Spontaneous applause from the crowd... pacificist, peacemaker, peacekeeper, whoever, whatever we are, we all owe a debt of gratitude to those who are remembered
