Tote and tote up -- another lesson in Southern Grammar. ©2014 - Kirby Sanders Tote and tote up are not interchangeable. To tote (verb) is equivalent to to carry. As in John boy -- Tote that sack of flour and the other stuff out to the wagon. Whereafter, one would ask the merchant to tote up the bill (verb = to total or calculate) the bill for the purchased goods and then negotiate whether payment was to be cash ir credit. If the wagon is up the street a ways, one would tote the parcels up the street. One would not not tote up the street them parcels. It would be too expensive to pay the bill for the entire street. Unless one were a crooked politico or a banker.
