Tottenham Hotspur have rejected a bid from Napoli for midfielder - TopicsExpress

Tottenham Hotspur have rejected a bid from Napoli for midfielder Etienne Capoue. The Italian side have reportedly made a bid of £8.25 million for the France international, which was rebuffed immediately. Spurs are said to be holding out for £12 million for the out-of-favour 25-year-old. But is manager Tim Sherwood missing a trick by selling him? Capoue moved to White Hart Lane last summer but a promising start was halted by an injury early on in the season. He has since struggled to force his way back into the packed Tottenham midfield, making only 9 appearances for the club so far. His only goal came during the 5-1 thumping at the hands of Manchester City earlier today. This game may force Sherwood to rethink his backline though. The midfielder is comfortable playing at the back, his height and strength could indeed make him the perfect answer to Spurs’ set-piece woes. Sherwood has so far favoured a centre-back partnership of Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches with the injuries to Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul. While no-one will question the athleticism of captain Dawson, doubt is often cast over his ability. Romania captain Chiriches, on the other hand, appears to be a more complete player, if not still a little wet behind the ears. Capoue has shown glimpses of his quality, both in the air and with the ball at his feet. Could he be the answer to the inconsistency in the Tottenham Backline? He has made 21 interceptions and 15 tackles in these 9 appearances, making only one defensive error (Squawka). He could be worth his weight (and there is a lot of him!) in gold if he can successfully fill the gaping hole often left at the back by the sluggish Dawson.
