Tottenham have joined north London rivals Arsenal in the race for Everton midfielder James McCarthy, according to MailOnline. The Gunners had been linked with a surprise move for the 24-year-old and were reportedly willing bid as much as £20m for his services. But Spurs are also keeping a close eye on developments this January and could test Everton’s resolve with a bid thought to be in the region of £12million. McCarthy joined the Toffees from Wigan Athletic in a £13million switch in 2013 and Everton boss Roberto Martinez has recently hinted he would be prepared to discuss a new contract with the midfielder, after a number of impressive performances this season. Tottenham’s new head of recruitment Paul Mitchell is a huge admirer of McCarthy from their time at Southampton together and he believes the Republic of Ireland international would fit perfectly into Mauricio Pochettino’s pressing style. .
