Tour groups from OmiHachiman, Japan have been visiting Leavenworth since 1992 (visiting 12 times) and became our Sister City in 1997. The reason for visiting our city is that a gentleman named William Merrell Vories was born in Leavenworth. In his young 20s, he traveled to Japan and made a huge impact on the Japanese people by his missionary work, then developing an architectural company. He built schools, hospitals, a YMCA, department store and many private homes. The Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) plans their itineraries when they visit and the CVB Director and various city officials have been invited there as their guest three times. We cherish this relationship that has grown over the years. Oh yes, you might want to note that they are firmly against having fun ;o)!
