Tourism Awareness Week is on ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, November 25, 2013 – GIS: The 2013 observance of Tourism Awareness Week began on Sunday, November 24 at the St. George’s Methodist Church, where the Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, the Hon. Alexandra Otway Noel and the Parliamentary Secretary with responsibility for Culture, Senator the Hon. Brenda Hood participated by reading the scripture lessons appointed for that day. The sermon, which was broadcasted live on GBN Radio, was delivered by Dr. Andrew Dye of the Methodist Church, who skillfully linked his own experiences in Grenada during the past 4 years to appeal to potential visitors to plan their vacation for a Grenada experience. Overall, the week of tourism-focused activities is organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture and the Grenada Board of Tourism in commemoration of November being designated by the Caribbean Tourism Organization as Caribbean Tourism Month. Celebrated under the theme “Repositioning Tourism for Greater Sustainability” this year’s observance aims at emphasizing the economic, social and cultural benefits that can be derived from the tourism industry, as well as underscoring the importance of sustainability in the context of future tourism opportunities for Grenada. It also seeks to raise awareness of the significant relationship that exists between the tourism sector and various community-based activities such as the Mt. Moritz Sunday Breakfast, the Gouyave Fish Friday, and the St. Mark’s Food Festival. Apart from several media initiatives, activities planned for the week include participation in a Career Fair at the National Stadium on Thursday, November 28 and a Steel Band Explosion and Mini-Trade Fair on the Melville Street from midday to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday November 30th. The Fish Friday event on November 29th is also tailored to reflect this year’s observance of Tourism Awareness Week. The media and the general public are invited to be part of the celebration, as Grenada focuses on repositioning its tourism sector to showcase the island as a clean, safe, and unique destination for leisure and business visitors.
