Town commons Improvements! News that you could use from a Doctor Mercer. FLASH: VETERANS DAY Parades and other events are being held today in communities across the land to honor people who have served in the U. S. Armed Forces.. On many days, but especially on this day, I think about my dad, who served in World War II. I think about the stories he shared with me, helping his young son understand the significance of what this day represents. Im appreciative of the service of all the men and women who have served. May we pause and reflect on what they do. CONTENTS Town Common Improvements Coming Tar River Legacy Plan View Last Nights Meeting TOWN COMMON IMPROVEMENTS COMING Last night we took a first step, a visible sign that we are turning the corner on realizing the potential of our Town Common. Accepting the recommendation from the Recreation and Parks Commission, we voted to spend the 150,000 budgeted for the Town Common on the following items: ADA Accessible Walkway--Parking Lot to Amphitheater 5 Ornamental Benches with Back 5 Ornamental Benches without Back Floating Fishing Pier--canoes and kayaks can be launched from here 5 Vinyl Coated High Quality Picnic tables Dumpster Relocation, pad & PVC Fencing Recycling Bin /Trash Receptacle Combo Water Fountain with Pet Bowl Decorative Park Entrance Citizen input to me supported improving the Town Common, though there were some differences of opinion about exactly what to fund. The list recommended by the citizens commission was a fair representation of the input I received. The vote was 4-2, with Councilmembers Glover and Smith dissenting because they preferred a different list of improvements. However, there seemed to be agreement, going forward, on continuing to improve access and use of the Town Common. Restrooms are a very expensive item, but there is definite interest in making this happen, perhaps as the next significant improvement. TAR RIVER LEGACY PLAN We accepted the consultants 115-page report containing many worthy projects to better utilize our river. Among the many ideas that received attention were: a signature bridge connecting our Center City with River Park North, camping platforms, boat access ramp, observation tower, cable water ski park, boardwalk, and zip line course. The suggested projects range from the very expensive to more moderate costs. We will need to review funding specific items in the context of all city funding needs. We definitely need to do all we reasonably can to better utilize our river. The action, in another agenda item, on modest improvements to the Town Common, already an important access point to the river, is a step in the right direction. The Tar River Legacy Plan can be accessed here. VIEW LAST NIGHTS COUNCIL MEETING--2 ways FIRST WAY ON TV ●See it for a few days on GTV-9. The schedule is found on the city webpage. I have a vision of Greenville as a vibrant business, educational, health, retirement, sports, recreation, and cultural leader in North Carolina; a powerful economic center with many biotech, green, ecotourism, and other industries; a beautiful, walkable, bikeable, inclusive, fiscally sound, safe city with a dynamic uptown; a city famous for its towering oak trees, flowered parks, clean air, and healthy citizens who know their neighbors; and a community of well-informed, participating, and happy citizens who can be proud of civil, trustworthy, and responsive leaders. A beautiful city, serving our region, does not just happen. We must all act today to make sure our city is a place where we and our children and our grandchildren will enjoy living, working, and serving. --Calvin CC NEWSLETTER This email newsletter is sent periodically to anyone who has expressed interest in my views on local and other issues, regardless of where they live.
