Town to explore process for finding uses for old Yarmouth high school building Tina Comeau Published on January 09, 2015 Now what? That’s what the town intends to explore as it will look at possible future uses for the building, which has been closed and vacant since a new high school opened on Forest Street two years ago. At this stage the town is looking to determine what process will be used to figure out what could become of the former high school building. For instance, would the town put out a request for proposals? One thing the town has preliminarily looked at – although there has been no in-depth discussion yet – is perhaps using the building as a multi-use business facility that could be combined with affordable housing accommodations. At council’s committee of the whole meeting at the end of February, a staff report will come back that looks at how the town should proceed in finding appropriate uses for the building. The Education Act says schools that are no longer used by a school board are turned back over to the municipal unit they are located in. The Tri-County Regional School Board has no future use for this building. A process is underway to explore a location for a new elementary school to house students displaced by the eventual closure of Central, South Centennial and Arcadia schools. Although the province has included the new elementary school in its 2015-2016 capital projects list, the selected site has yet to be finalized. The three sites being assessed are the former Yarmouth Junior High site on Parade Street, the existing Arcadia School site and property located off Mrytle Street, which branches off of Parade Street. As for the former high school building, the town says it wants to be proactive with its recent acquisition of the building in exploring potential future uses for it
