"Toxic or not, the influx of the the sediment is dangerous to the environment, said Melanie Houston, director of water policy and environmental health for the Ohio Environmental Council. The sludge can be a danger to not just fish or amphibians but it can suffocate the aquatic insects that those animals rely on as a food source, she said. Houston expects to see more of these incidents because pipeline construction in eastern Ohio has become commonplace. Recently discovered oil and gas reserves in the region, including the Utica Shale, have captured the attention of corporate giants in the fields of energy extraction and shipping."
