Tozers Conversion to Christ. The speaker had a strong German accent, but it did not take Tozer long to realize he was preaching. Tozer began to wonder about him. Doesnt this man have church to preach in? It isnt even Sunday! Why is this old man so excited? Tozer was startled by these words from the preacher: If you dont know how to be saved, just call on God, saying, God, be merciful to me -- a sinner, and God will hear you. Those words burned their way into Tozers heart, and he could not get the preachers voice out of his head. As he walked home, he gave serious thought to what the preacher said. He had never heard such a message before. The mans words deeply trouble him... At home, young Tozer headed straight to the attic to be alone so he could think these things through. Tozer entered the attic a convict sinner and emerged as a new creation in Christ Jesus... The Beginning of His Pursuit Essie would often hear her brother groaning in prayer behind the basement furnace. The first time she heard him, she was frightened; then realized it was her brother praying and wrestling with God. (God wrestled Jacob - God, the Father of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) Following the morning service, the church youth planned a picnic lunch followed by a Bible study and an afternoon social in the church parlor. Tozer, never one to pass up an opportunity, invited Ada to attend the gathering with him. Oh, no, objected Ada, I couldnt do that. I have to hurry home; my mother is expecting me. Well, persisted Tozer, theres a telephone over there. Why dont you call your mother and tell her that a very nice young man will be bringing you home later this afternoon? Ada laughed. Tozers arguments prevailed. Ada did stay and he did take her home that afternoon. In fact, Tozer soon became a regular caller at the Pfautz home. It was Kate Pfautz, Adas mother, who, a year and a half after Tozers conversion to Christ, prayed with him to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Young man, Mrs. Pfautz said, you must get down on your knees and die to yourself before the Holy Spirit will fill you. She backed up her statement with detail instruction and patient persistence. One evening in her home. Tozer knelt by the sofa, and Kate prayed with him. He was instantly filled with the Holy Spirit. I was 19 years old, Tozer recalled, earnestly in prayer, when I was baptized with a might infusion of the Holy Spirit. I a later sermon, he told his congregation about the experience... I know with assurance what God did for me and within me.
