Traces of Texas The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: The iconic Huts Hamburgers location on 6th street in Austin began business in August, 1939 as Sammies Drive-In. Owner Sammie Joseph operated the drive-in and remodeled it by adding the east-side dining room in spring, 1947. The main dining room was added in 1954. The business was then sold and Sammies became Elis Lounge. In October, 1964 Elis Lounge became the Picante Mexican Restaurant and operated until May, 1969. Homer Hut Hutson bought the lease and turned Picantes in Huts Hamburgers. Huts had originally begun business on South Congress in late 1939 and moved to a location across the street and a couple of blocks to the west of where it is currently located (where GSD&M advertising is now) in 1959. Huts remained there until it moved to its present building in late 1969. In 1981, the year of the great flood in downtown Austin, everything surrounding Huts was seriously damaged but, miraculously, Huts was almost entirely unscathed. I like to think it was bovine intervention.
