Tracing Ancestors that were in the armed forces. There is absolutely nothing straightforward about trying to trace you ancestor through their military record. There are many dozens of registers, data bases, rolls of microfiche, a lot of which is on-line usually for a fee, although occasionally free of charge. There is also a lot of information available off line, in which case you either need to go yourself to the location or someone needs to go for you. The absolute minimum information required will be the persons name, the approximate dates between which they served, the armed force in which they served, and the name - as it was at the time - of the regiment, or the ship/s on which they served. Once you have this and you know what sort of information you are looking for from the armed forces records, that will narrow the number of places to being your search. What follows is an attempt to list what is available and where, and what information you can expect it to contain. This is in no way intended to be exhaustive but it should give you a good idea of where to begin your search. for more see: legsontehgound
