Track update from Coach Rushing: West Platte took eight - TopicsExpress

Track update from Coach Rushing: West Platte took eight competitors to the class 2 sectional meet Saturday and will be taking eight to the state meet this coming weekend. Every one of the athletes did their job and qualified in at least one of their events. Paige Larison was struggling in the shot put and on her final throw threw a season best. However, the person measuring didnt mark the throw correctly and when confronted the head judge could only allow her to take a re-throw. On the re-throw, Paige didnt throw what she needed to make the top 4. I hate that it had to come down to a technicality because she threw far enough to qualify for state. Nobody works as hard as Paige and she deserved it. Paige had a little over an hour to gather herself and throw the discus. She was visibly upset after the shot and she knew she still had business to take care of. She went out and won the discus by over 19 feet! Everybody from West Platte that was there couldnt have been more proud of what she accomplished right after being at the low of lows. First up for the boys was Adam Roe in the discus. Adam ended up in 2nd place throwing 145 2. Adam usually throws in the upper 150s so I know the work hell put in this week will make him ready for state. Adam also won the shot put with a throw of 50 8.5 and Colton Goodlet threw a personal best of 47 0.5 taking 4th place and qualifying for state. Colton is a true competitor and throws his best when it really counts. The other events were the 4x800m relay, the 4x200m relay, the 4x400m relay, and the 3200m run. In the 3200m Nathan Wilson ran a season best 10:48.76 but was only good enough for 8th place. The 4x800 m relay ran a great race, running 11 seconds faster than they did last week at districts. They ran 8:35.13 which got them the silver and punched Nathan Wilsons, Bryce Younts, Dillon Crocketts, and Jack Cogans ticket to state. Not everyone on the relay split their fastest time so the way I see it there is room for improvement. The team of Conner Salmons, Colton Goodlet, Adam Roe, and Dillon Crockett in the 4x200m relay ran good as well just getting edged by Butler to take 2nd place with a time of 1:33.24 breaking their own school record...again. The 4x400m relay did what theyve been doing all year....winning. They crushed their old school record by 1.3 seconds running a 3:30.16! Theyll be going in to the state meet with the third fastest time in the state. The goal all year for these guys has been to break the 3:30 barrier and even though they won they were upset they were so close to reaching their goal. I have no doubt in my mind that they will on the biggest stage of the year. These guys are ready for the highest level of competition. In conclusion, Adam Roe has qualified for state in four events, Colton Goodlet (who has never been past districts) qualified for 3, Dillon Crockett (didnt do track last year) qualified for 3, and Conner Salmons (Jr. thats never been past districts) qualified for 2. We have a strong team and my goal as a coach is to bring home a top-4 trophy. Good luck, Jays!!
