Traction WITH contraction. Inspired by Dr. Andreo Spina... Having range of motion without control is useless range! Traction can be very useful in tensioning the connective tissue matrix. In fact, research shows physical distortion (exercise and/or manual therapy) has the potential to change the cell-matrix tension state, influencing localized release of cellular growth factors (Grinnell 2008). Such changes can lead to profound and rapid modulation of structural, functional and mechanical interactions b/w fibroblasts and the extracellular matrix contributing to the reorganization of connective tissue (simple version...tissues change when loaded). This quick clip positions the body so your body mass/weight can be used to apply a high level of tension. In addition, contract and create internal/external rotation while under tension; DONT just hang. Use tension and your active contraction to apply force to the shoulder joint tissues and thus stimulate a need to adapt. Dont think, good or bad technique...as Dr. Mel Siff once said there is generally no such thing as an unsafe movement, only an unsafe way of executing movement for a specific individual at a specific time(Siff, 2000). Enjoy!
