Trade agreements threaten the lives of millions in both rich and - TopicsExpress

Trade agreements threaten the lives of millions in both rich and poor nations. Several of the countries negotiating the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) are currently also negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement with the US; leaked drafts of the IP chapter show that the US is pushing for harmful provisions that go beyond WTO trade rules (that are bad enough), which are aimed at restricting the ability of governments to regulate in the interest of the public health and delay the availability of low-cost generic versions of medicines. The RCEP and TPP are on track to become the most harmful trade agreements ever, for access to medicines in developing countries. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal is currently being negotiated between the US and eleven other Pacific Rim nations: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. The negotiations are being conducted in secret, but leaked drafts of the agreement include aggressive intellectual property (IP) rules that would restrict access to affordable, life-saving medicines for millions of people.
