Tradition......... At times it may seem archaic. At times it may beg the question of why do we still do this? We have other things to do that are more pressing. But tradition tells us where we are. It grounds us and gives us all a point of reference of commonality that binds us together. Tradition binds us with those that have come before us. And it will connect us with those that come after us. I just witnessed the NCO Induction ceremony of the 504th MP BN. The ceremony where we symbolically sever the life of the Trooper and start the new one of the NCO. The induction ceremony is full of symbolism and reflection that dates back hundreds of years. During this ceremony, as an NCO you could not help but be connected to all the NCOs throughout the history of the Army. During our time now, what we do today will echo into the future no different than what has happened in the past echoes now. Tradition ensures that the Backbone of the Army will continue far into the future.
