Traditional punishments suggested for American Samoa sports violence Posted at 23:01 on 23 September, 2013 UTC Authorities and community leaders in American Samoa are due to meet to discuss recent violence against school sports teams. Five students were injured and a bus stoned during two incidents involving volleyball players last week. The governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga has called the community-wide meeting and is interested in having matai mete out traditional village punishments.to deal with the issue. Our correspondent in Pago Pago, Monica Miller, says the Director of Education has banned school sports indefinitely until the cause of the violence is found. “One of the things that the Director of Education has said is parents should really be looking at whether they’re teaching kids the values of respect of authorities, respect of property and that sort of thing. She believes that parents are giving up on their kids and not putting their foot down.” Monica Miller says there’s some dismay at the ban as students seeking sports scholarships gear up for the arrival of off-island sports talent scouts.
