Traditionally, the Jesus Prayer consists of the single phrase, - TopicsExpress

Traditionally, the Jesus Prayer consists of the single phrase, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." It is based on the power of the name of Jesus (Jn. 14:13, Phil. 2:10), the humility of the tax collector in the temple (Lk. 18-13) and Simon Peter before Jesus. (Lk. 5:8). Of course, it also implies and stirs up many other aspects of Orthodox and Catholic Christian thinking and creedal beliefs. It can also be prayed in shorter versions, but usually at least with the inclusion of the name of Jesus. It is to be prayed continually to fulfill the injunction of Saint Paul to "pray continually." (1 Thess. 5:17). To help with this is often joined to the breathing, remembering that the Hebrew word for spirit "ruah" actually means "breath" or "wind". Thus, it is also an invocation of the Holy Spirit. The use of a rosary of cord also helps with the discipline, praying a full Jesus prayer with each knot on the cord.________Meditations From Solitude (pgs. 270-271) by John Michael Talbot
