Traditions of Christmas: Part 3 of 7 This past Saturday was the commemoration of St. Nicholas. Nicholas was a bishop in Myra (present day Turkey) and he was well known for his generosity, especially towards children and young women. With his red Bishop’s robes and long white beard, he was an easily recognizable figure in the community. His fame grew and his reputation spread, even into the Dutch countries, where he was known as “Sante Niklaus” (pronounced “SAHN-tay Nee-CLAWS”). As the Dutch immigrated to America, they brought along the stories of this “Santa Claus”, and American cartoonist Thomas Nast and American poet Clement Moore gave us the visual representation of Santa as we know him today, complemented by the Coca-Cola advertisements of the late 1940s and after.
