Traffickers arrested Sept 21,2013 : Nepal Police on Saturday arrested five persons, including three women, in Sarlahi district while they were trying to fly to Iraq via India for foreign employment. The government had banned Nepalis from working in Iraq in 2004 after a local Islamic group Ansar-al Sunna murdered 12 Nepali workers. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the Armed Police Force (APF) in the district Bharat Basnet informed that the five persons were arrested by a team of APF deployed at Lachka border. “They were heading toward Muzaffarpur, India through a shortcut route along Lachka border,” added Basnet. The three arrested women have been identified as Sommaya Moktan, 25, of Makwanpur, Jangmu Sherpa, 23, of Dolakha, and Lila Thapa of Morang, informed the district-based APF. “Likewise, the other two men -- Bir Bahadur Tamang of Sindupalchowk and Chandra Bahadur Moktan of Sarlahi district-- have also been arrested. It has been learnt that the men were taking them to Iraq,” said Basnet. After arresting them, APF has also seized US and Indian currency worth more than Rs 60,000 and six cell phones from them. Inspector Surendra Jha said that the arrested have been sent to the District Police Office (DPO) for further investigation. “We have learnt that the women paid Rs 60,000 each to Tara Tamang of Kathmandu to go to Iraq,” he said. In his statement to the police, Bir Bahadur said Tara had given him Rs 35,000 to take her to Delhi, India. He had also said there was another person to take them to Iraq. “He said that a month ago, he had taken four other women to India through the same route,” said Jha quoted Bir Bahadur as saying. Police have also seized their air-tickets to Iraq. A few years ago, Lila had already been to Iraq to work as a migrant worker. After her return, she has reportedly been working in connivance with Tara to send women to Iraq, said Jha, adding, “As we did not recover their passports, we also suspect that the men were taking the women to India to be sold in brothels.”
