Tragedy: Wani dies on table where his pension file is placed the treatment meted out to government employees and pensioners is so callous and merciless that it causes hearts to bleed, reported a local daily. Abdul Khaliq Wani of Zogiyar Sheeri (Baramulla)—a retired employee of the Power Development Corporation– is the worst example of this horrific treatment. Wani left his house on Monday to inquire about the status of his unsettled pension case at the AG Office in Srinagar, he ensured that his 8-year-old handicapped grand-daughter accompanies him. Tabassum has been a witness to Wani’s strenuous efforts to get his pension case settled for the past two years. However this time it turned out to be Wani’s final effort in that direction as he died on the table where his pension file was lying. “When the concerned officer told my Dada Ji that it will take further time to settle the case, he suddenly collapsed on the table and blood started oozing out from his nose. I cried aloud but he showed no sign of life. I was later conveyed that he is no more,” said Tabasum, who had accompanied his grandfather several times to the AG Office and Jammu Secretariat for settlement of the pension case. Wani, who retired in December 2011, was working as driver in the Civil Investigation and Design Division of the Power Development Corporation Sopore. “Recently he was conveyed that an order has been issued from the Civil Secretariat Srinagar directing the AG Office to release all his dues. However the officials at the AG Office initiated one more enquiry, leaving Wani shattered at a time when he was preparing for the marriage of his son and daughter slated for October this year,” said an employee of the PDC. Wani’s death has shattered the family members. “I have turned orphan now; my father has left me before seeing me as a bride. He was counting days for my marriage and had promised me that he would get me married with pomp and show,” said Wani’s daughter, as tears rolled down her cheeks.
