Tragedy of the Commons, example. Wild west oil drilling in North Dakota. At Ft Berthold, the tribe did not reserve land for cultural sites, and oil wells and pipelines are allowed anywhere. This depletes the oil for fast profit, kills the wildlife, and much land is ruined by spills, pollution and Flaring. This is the legacy of the tribal council from 2007 to 2014. [The state officials basically sacrificed western ND for quick profits - they set spacing and location of oil wells, and state law is used to regulate oil companies on the Reservation lands. ] In 2015, the tribal council is still not considering sound land use practices and ways to limit FLARING (waste of natural gas). The top priority so far, is to do open enrollment so more members can be enrolled. The council really wants to dole out per caps -- to stay in office. The heck with preserving the land and wildlife .... After the oil is gone, the tribe as a whole will be left with scarred and degraded land, and little wildlife. By then, the current council will be history.
