Training like an athlete: First off I would just like to - TopicsExpress

Training like an athlete: First off I would just like to introduce myself, my name is Hamzat (Hammy) one of the new trainers at the Better Body Group, Sevenoaks and I look forward to meeting you in the near future. Come say Hello, next time your in. My background has been heavily rugby based having played and currently working at the elite level so I have a very strong understanding of athlete performance enhancement. My firm belief is that every person can and should train similar to the way your elite athletes train. This is not to say that you should all be capable of 200kg squats or be able to sprint a sub 10 second 100 metres. I was thinking more of the holistic approach to training, improving postural strength, movement, injury prevention/management, competency (knowledge) and base strength before getting into moving big weights. In one of my roles as a strength & conditioning coach my minimum requirement for everyone that I coach is the ability to move their own body weight efficiently and without pain first before we look at adding, significant weight or increasing speed of movement. The ability to handle your own body weight efficiently, transfer strength efficiently and control movement is what the top end athlete needs to compete and be successful. I have coached international standard rugby league players who cant squat, bench or deadlift that magic number of double their own bodyweight but their ability to transfer the force (strength) they possess at top end speed whilst they play the game is mind blowing. Where most people seem to flounder when it comes to exercising is not setting specific goals. With athletes this is a lot easier as their specific goals are targeted towards improving performance for the sport they compete in. But for the average person having a specific goal, time scale and purpose can drastically improve the training that person undertakes. The great thing about the better body shop is all the trainers will work with you on specific/realistic goals whilst also giving you a realistic time frame on when you can achieve them. Finally the biggest point to take away is the attitude and desire that athletes posses to constantly improve. Once you have set a specific goal and reached it, then set another one and another one. Push forward but occasionally look back to where you first started to see the journey you have come on and if you have really pushed yourself I am sure you will see a significant difference. Hope to see you soon Hammy Sevenoaks Personal Trainer Bsc Hons, ASCC, NASM CES & PES
