Transforming JB city centre - JOHOR BARU: Johor Baru city centre is set to transform itself into a vibrant place within the next five to seven years under the multi-billion ringgit transformation project. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the revitalisation and rejuvenation of Sungai Segget which started last month marked the ambitious plan to transform the city centre. He said Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) and Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) task to monitor the implementation of the project must ensure it would take place as scheduled. “Johor Baru denisens could look forward to a new city centre when the transformation project is completed in years to come,’’ Mohamed Khaled said at the opening of the JB Transformation Open Day here. He said old and new elements would co-exist in the city centre under the transformation project including conserving old buildings with significant historical and architectural elements. Mohamed Khaled said rehabilitation work of Sungai Segget into the new 1.2km water way in the city would turn it into the “Gem of Johor Baru City” and a new tourist attraction. Mohamed Khaled said it was vital to transform Johor Baru City centre in tandem with its position as one of the five flagships development zones in Iskandar Malaysia. The country’s first economic corridor is divided into five flagship zones: the other four zones are Nusajaya, Eastern Gate Development, Western Gate Development and Kulai-Senai. “We must ensure that Johor Baru remains attractive and able to attract crowd although the state administrative seat had moved to Kota Iskandar in Nusjaya in 2009,’’ he said. Meanwhile, Irda chief executive officer Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said it would take about two years to rehabilitate and revitalise Sungai Segget into a new landmark here. He said phase one of the work involved the construction of centralize sewerage treatment plant (CSWP) to enhance water quality through reducing pollutant loads to Straits of Tebrau. Ismail said this would be followed with the opening up of the river which flows along Jalan Wong Ah Fook in down town Johor Baru. Sungai Segget was covered in 2005, a short term measure at the most feasible one at that point in time to ensure odour and pollution of the river was contained above the ground. “The success of the river rehabilitation project will be the focal point of the entire redevelopment project of the city centre,’’ he said. thestar.my/News/Community/2013/07/11/Transforming-JB-city-centre-Ambitious-plan-starts-with-Sungai-Segget-in-multibillion-ringgit-project.aspx
