Transition children were delighted that their parents could come - TopicsExpress

Transition children were delighted that their parents could come in to school recently and witness them engaging in a science experiment set up by Mrs Hayes. While proud parents watched, they looked at liquids and solids and the temperature at which water freezes. Initially, they were given a foil-wrapped ice block, and they discussed what they thought was inside, how it had become that way and why it was dripping with water when they held it in their hands. It was fascinating to watch them unwrap the ice to discover a ‘creature’ trapped in the ice. They had to consider how they could release it and used plastic tools, water, wood hammers or the popular choice of a real hammer! The children had great fun releasing the plastic creepy crawlies from the ice block, discussing how long it took for a small piece of ice to melt in their hand and estimating how long it would take for a giant block of coloured ice to melt. We are very proud of our young scientists!
