Translation of article by sotsdirectora Julie Byrne in Friday’s CAPGROS HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD GET THE MOST OUT OF THEIR ENGLISH CLASS? Children love it when their parents show an interest in what they’re doing whether it’s football, music, English or any other activity. How can you show an interest when they’re learning another language? • Find out what the course covers and what the course objectives are • Show a positive attitude towards the teacher and the method they are using • Have realistic expectations. You have to understand that your child is assimilating a lot of information which he/she isn’t able to use yet • Ask specific questions about the lesson (e.g. “what did you sing today?” or “what’s this photocopy about?”). If you just ask “what did you do today?” the answer will probably be “nothing” (they’ve done so much that they don’t know where to begin and saying “nothing” or “I don’t know” is easier) and parents worry that they’re throwing their money down the drain • Ask to see their homework when the child is older. Even if the parents don’t know the language their child is learning they will be able to see if they’re doing the work properly and get an idea of how the lessons are going • Have a positive attitude towards the language. If you child sees that it’s important for you then it will be important for him/her. If you follow this simple guideline then your child will feel that what they are doing is important and that will improve their performance.
