Translations Revisited... today at 2PM! Well known Irish documentary filmmaker, Maurice Fitzpatrick will visit MIHC! A BBC Documentary by Maurice Fitzpatrick. In 1980, Brian Friel’s luminous play “Translations” -- about the beauty of language, the diversity of cultures, and how people transcend differences -- was performed amid the strife of Derry, Northern Ireland. In 2013, the play was again staged in that city – but in a place that had been transformed by fifteen years of peace. The film looks at the significance of “Translations” and asks whether its message has stood the test of time. Fitzpatrick, who now lives in Cologne, Germany, was born in Ireland, where he has a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Trinity College, Dublin. He also has a master’s degree from Senshu Univerity in Tokyo, Japan, where he lived from 2004-2011 and lectured at three different Japanese universities. The filmmaker is proficient in seven languages (English, Irish, French, Japanese, Italian, German, and Norwegian) and currently teaches English literature and language at Universität zu Köln, Germany. In addition to teaching in Germany and Japan, he also has taught in Poland and the United States. Fitzpatrick has published numerous articles on Irish writers, and he also has done interviews with prominent authors. In addition, he writes a syndicated column on Irish affairs.
