Transparency. One of the biggest things that many folks here - TopicsExpress

Transparency. One of the biggest things that many folks here have complained about is the lack of transparency within our administration and board. We members pay a lot of money to live here, we do it willingly and consciously but that does not mean that we want to do it blindly. Our assessments are basically a form of local tax and like any citizens we want to know what is going on and how these taxes are being spent. The recent changes to the board has replaced two of the incumbents that many considered most active in keeping our members unaware of what is going on around here. The hope many now have is that having seen how that policy has been rejected in the ballot, the remaining reduced majority will understand that folks around here want to have clear information about how HVL is being run and we also understand that this is our right and not a request. The board does hold executive sessions as is right but they should never be used to cloak their actions from the members unnecessarily. As the next few months progress it will be interesting to follow how our new board chooses to behave. We often see in our national politics how our government crawls along getting nowhere simply because whoever holds a majority in the house or senate refuses to compromise or work honestly with the opposition. We do not want that here, we want progress made in our community on moderate actions and at a sensible rate, with true fiscal responsibility, not a continuation of the bloody-minded and often secretive processes we have witnessed. The best way for our community to advance is together and with broad agreement on the things we are undertaking, to do that our members must be given full information on the board business and this should be provided by means that fit the lifestyles of the many working families we have. Many of our members commute every day and have no hope of connecting to the board or other meetings. It’s not their fault that they can’t attend it’s a fact of their lives here. Videotaping board meetings would be an excellent start to improving the transparency of our board and admin. This has previously been rejected out of hand for very frivolous reasons but it’s time for this to be reconsidered seriously.
