Transportation projects offer Detroiters plenty of job opportunities, U.S. Rep. Peters says Detroiters should start preparing now for the jobs that will be created through infrastructure projects, including the M1 Rail, Ann Arbor to Detroit commuter rail and reconstruction on I-94 and I-75, U.S. Rep Gary Peters said today. The transportation jobs summit, held today at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers’ Local 58 near downtown Detroit, was the icebreaker for talks on Detroit adding the role of international transportation hub to its brand. Peters said the move could help significantly in economic revitalization for the area. Officials from the Southeastern Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) announced early during the summit that thousands of jobs could be created as a result of the infrastructure projects as well by building new industries, attracting transients and updating the public education system. SEMCOG officials analyzed the impact of six projects: the M1 Rail, the Ann Arbor to Detroit commuter rail, a new international tradecrossing with Canada, Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal upgrades and improvements to I-94 and I-75. The report describes how the projects will create opportunities and demand for welders, equipment operators, plumbers, electricians and truck drivers, among other fields.
