Traveling the express canal boats is an adventuresome way to see the real Bangkok, and to meet commuting locals. These long speed boats go rather fast along this narrow, choppy canal, and stop abruptly at small wooden piers just long enough for passengers to quickly jump on or off--hopefully without falling into the putrid water. A fare tender grasps onto a rope as he or she walks precariously along the edge (while the boat is in full motion) to collect the appropriate fare.
