Travelled 700 odd kms (Milan to Rome) by train in a little less than 3 hours. It was a very comfortable ride. Arrived at station half hour before the departure time. No checkins or security checks and out of the station bag and baggage in 10 minutes on arrival. The train touched a top speed of 290 kmph and generally cruised at 240 kmph. Such trains connect more than 100 stations across Europe. But at equivalent Rs7000+ per ticket, it was a fairly expensive ride. Would love to have such trains in India, but how many Indians would be able to afford it? I would be happy if tickets were more readily available and people were not squashed in general compartments.
