Trayvon Martin was innocent of any illegal activity at the time suspicion fell upon him - he was racially profiled by George Zimmerman. Why do people automatically look upon black men with suspicion, and assume they are engaged in illegal, and often violent, activity? That must be addressed to avoid further tragedies, on both sides. Furthermore, Zimmerman should have stayed in his car - the entire event could have been avoided if he had obeyed police. Zimmerman also profiled the police - as useless and ineffectual - why? Why do people automatically assume the police will do nothing and they must take the law into their own hands? That is another question that must be addressed, by the police and the public. The real question, which goes unanswered, is who started the fight? If Zimmerman attacked Martin, then in my mind, Martin would have had the right to protect himself. And the reverse is also true- if Martin attacked Zimmerman then Zimmerman had the right to protect himself. Unfortunately, there were no witnesses to that link in the chain of the events - therefore, the jury had no choice but to acquit Zimmerman. As an aside, I expected riots - I was happy to see that people have learned that further violence is not the answer.
