Trent Brown ----------- Big protests today against the budget. At the rally in Sydney there were community groups, campaigners, unionists and a dozen socialist fragments. The greens, a small but visible presence. Notably absent was the Labor Party (if they were there, i didnt see them), who seem to want to play the usual game, exploiting the wave of discontent the libs generate, then doing little whilst in government to reverse the trend. I dont know whether to describe the ALPs relation to the Libs as symbiotic or parasitic, but its clear they depend on them a lot. In Shortens address to the ALP convention this morning, he said, almost gleefully, that Abbotts budget has defined the labor party. A shame that a party that has given Australia so many good things in the past now depends on a brutally conservative budget to give it a sense of identity. Time for others to step up and speak for the people-centric values Labor seems increasingly unable or unwilling to represent.
