Trialing a new wheat variety near Naracoorte SA this year called EINSTEIN. Shooting for 10+ tonne per hectare, world record is apparently 17 tonne. English red wheat variety developed out of an older wheat called REVENUE but with some unusual features. Grows very flat for a few months, looks more like Barley at that time, very hungry for NPK - especially Nitrogen, has a 10 month long growing season and needs a cold snap at stem extension to get a decent head of wheat on it. Otherwise it wont yield as well. Wished wed known that before - Justin from CASTEC Naracoorte found that out when talking to a seed breeder involved in releasing this variety here in Australia. Highly variable results depending on whether it gets the cold snap or not. Seems the seed selling companies have decided to omit that information piece regarding special English conditions. Well see how we go! We still do get some cold mornings down Naracoorte in October. May have to foliar out some urea/water one evening and get the stems real cold overnight. Will do regular updates on this one because any wheat yield over 10 tonne per hectare is pretty damn good here in Australia. 12+ tonne would definitely get us the district record, a feature in the local paper and be absolutely brilliant.
