Trials of being misunderstood are shared by everyone. A passionate professional psychologist (who revealed herself to be a mother of a child with autism), strongly criticized our comic book! She feared we would negatively portray autism for the sake of entertainment. Id lie if I said her post didnt initially anger me, and I wanted to scream my peers ignorance as a professional and personal attack. Doesnt she know me? Didnt she read about our goals? I sat. I breathed. I waited. I re-read her post. With fresh eyes, I saw her own suffering hidden between the words she would later express. We wanted the same thing: strong advocacy and respect for people living with ASD. I feel compassion, and hope I do a good job answering her concerns.
