Tribalism in a pluralistic society Tribalism has a very strong adaptive effect in human development. Humans are social animals who are generally not suited to live in isolation. Tribalism and ethnocentrism help to bond individuals committed to the group, even at the expense of personal interest. Sometimes bullying tactics are used when a tribal member is unwilling to conform to the politics of the collective no matter how adverse. Social groups within the pluralistic societiy rely upon the tribal instincts of their members for the survival of their organization and group interests. It is therefore no surprise that generally representative democracy relies on the ability of the tribe to organize and deal with the problem of an entire nation. Much of political tension in modern societies is the conflict between the desire to organize a nation using the tribal values of egalitarianism and unity ......forgetting that large societies are unavoidably impersonal, non homogenous and not amenable to small society beliefs and customs. Tribal impulsive thinking if not properly channeled can manifest itself in unhealthy rivalries between tribes leading to unfortunate incidents....that would constrain the development and social cohesion in the comunities.
