Tribune UNIABUJA lecturers call off strike •COEASU may suspend strike tomorrow 16.Jul.2014 Clement Idoko -Abuja THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja branch, has called off its strike, following accord reached with the new vice chancellor of the university, Professor Mike Adikwu. Branch chairman of ASUU, Ben Ugheoke, told newsmen in Abuja, on Tuesday, that the decision to suspend the strike was reached on Monday night during a congress held at the institution’s mini-campus. Ugheoke said “we resolved at the congress to suspend the strike after signing an agreement with the vice chancellor, Professor Micheal Adikwu.” The UniAbuja ASUU branch strike embarked upon on June 2, a week to the exit of the immediate past vice chancellor of the university, Professor James Adelabu, disrupted the conduct of the second semester examination. This led to series of protest by the university students and the eventual close down of the institution by the authorities. The lecturers had gone on strike to press home the release of the White Paper on the visitation panel to the university. It will be recalled that the Federal Government had, on July 16, 2012, constituted a visitation panel to resolve issues affecting the institution but the White Paper of the report was yet to be released. Meanwhile, indications emerged in Abuja, on Tuesday, that the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) might suspend its seven-month-old strike tomorrow. This followed a parley held by the Committee of Council Chairmen of Federal Colleges of Education to douse the crisis rocking the sector. It was learnt that the strike might be called off after the proposed meeting with the Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, on Thursday. ‘...No court order sacking UniAbuja VC’ THE solicitor to the University of Abuja, Chief Wale Olanipekun, has debunked media report suggesting that the newly -appointed vice chancellor of the university, Professor Mike Adikwu, was restrained from performing his duties on the order of the National Industrial Court (NIC). Reacting to the purported story in a statement in Abuja, on Tuesday, Wole Olanipekun & Co, acting as solicitors to the university and Governing Council of the University of Abuja, said there was no iota of truth in the said report. The statement said: “Nothing can be farther from the truth, as, at no time did the National Industrial Court, presided over by Justice B.A. Adejumo, or any judge of the court at all, make any order restraining the vice chancellor as reported by the newspaper or any newspaper for that matter. “Put in more direct terms, neither is there any trouble in the University of Abuja nor any order restraining the vice chancellor, who was appointed by the council on June 30, 2014, from performing the functions of his office,” it said. Olanipekun, further stated that contrary to the newspaper publication, there was in existence, no order of the National Industrial Court made on “Thursday, July 10, 2014 or any Thursday whatsoever.” He, however, said the university governing council was aware of “the Suit No. NICN/ABJ/188/2014-Dr.Raji Rasheed & 2 Ors v. University of Abuja & 7 Ors. filed by three Council members in respect of the appointment of the vice chancellor, made by the council on June 30, 2014. “They are not prepared to ventilate their defence on the pages of newspapers, as that would be done properly and adequately with the precincts of the court.”
