Tribute to HE President Michael Sata While on national duty in 2009, I made a stop over in Kapiri Mposhi at Engen Filling Station to sample some food. Suddenly a nissan patrol parked next to us and a well known PF member stepped out namely Judge Ngoma, commonly known as scorpion. Seconds later, a man full of energy and beaming with smiles came over to us and took turns shaking our hands. He proceeded to where the vendors were and greeted them as well. The following day, we met again in Mpika and he whispered to us you guys smell PF. We all laughed and jumped into the vehicle as we proceeded to Luwingu. The man was no stranger, he was President Michael Sata, Leader of the Patriotic Front. I remember him for his simplicity and able to mix freely with a common man. At one time, while passing through Mtendere, I heard people shouting pabwaatooo and sizable crowd had gathered. They say curiosity loosened the cat and when I asked what was going on, someone stated, we are having a good time with president Sata, he has bought Shake Shake enough for everyone to enjoy the weekend. Minutes later, he bought bags of mealie meal from different traders and drove off leaving people excited and shouting man of the people! Further talking about simplicity, he twice jumped on a bus from Chipata to Lundazi for a live programme on Radio Chikaya completely making other passangers amused. It is said that he understood group dynamics just like the palm of his hand. He danced whenever possible but was never shy to state the whole truth during rallies including telling those making noise to shut up. His contribution to Zambian politics and economic philosophies will be missed by many. It is his humour that still remains unmatched in Zambian politics today. In satirical manner, he referred to Unza as Kalinga Linga University, CBU as baby university, other politicians as under five, a named radio station as baby radio, etc. Such statements sent people to the floor with laughter thereby easing the tension amongst people. I for one will greatly miss him for his ability to simplify the dynamics of economic theories and make a common person understand. The message of his demise on Tuesday night, turned the aftermath of the Jubilee celebrations into a painful and sad moment. It is my prayer that God will see us through during this difficult time, and will dry our tears. It is not time to mourn but time to celebrate the life of a great leader whose passion for Zambia was visible to all.
