Tribute to Jane Wicker. Jane Wicker was a friend and colleague of mine. She began wingwalking in 1990, a year before I did. I was always impressed with her stuntwork and her ability to push the envelope, thus inspiring others to dream beyond, including me. In the 1990s, Jane worked on the east coast and I on the west, so we only saw each other at the ICAS convention, which was once a year in December. It was hardly are chance to get to know each other as I wished we could do. In late 2007, I started PWIN, Professional Wingwalkers International Network. I opened it to everyone who ever wingwalked or wing-rode providing they met certain criteria. Jenny Forsythe was instrumental in aiding me in this start up. Jane was the first to sign on with great enthusiasm. PWIN fostered camaraderie and brought the wingwalkers and wing riders around the world together. Jane and I formed a great friendship. When Jane embarked on the quest to restore a Stearman and renew her wingwalking career, I was very supportive. Jane was likable, always full of fun and full of life. I cheered her on, wishing for her the very best. We weren’t competitive for shows, being we worked on different coasts and performed different stunts, so we had this unique bond. We fully understood what it was to “walk the walk” of a wingwalker and thus could fully encourage each other. Even in the tight airshow community this was special. Jane had a slogan… if I remember it right… and it goes something like this “It’s not the seconds you put in life, it’s the life you put into the seconds”. Peace to you my friend, Jane. Peace to all who loved her and where inspired by her.
