My route, along the lane leading to the Parsee bakery, took me past a veritable lapel of micro tailors. This, Matunga’s answer to Savile Row. In little more than shelf space they sit cross-legged working tortuously long days cutting, sewing and ironing. Could I do that? With these knees? I don’t think so. With space at a premium everywhere you look in Matunga, life is little better for the garland makers as they too, cross-legged and cramped in their tiny two-tier stalls, cut, prune and thread yard upon yard of marigolds. Could I do that? With these knees? Who am I kidding. The walk back took me close to another of Matunga’s temples. Inside, a classical concert of music and song was underway. Soaking up karma and communion in equal measure, musicians and audience sat cross-legged. Could I do that? With these knees? Not for all the tea in Darjeeling.
