Trigger warning: Appeal for funds using the tragedy-of-disability approach So, according to the latest shameless fear-mongering and metaphor mixing from Autism Speaks, I am a missing (or gravely ill) child climbing on furniture (dont most kids do that?), bounding around (dont most kids do that?) and raiding the refrigerator (doesnt EVERYONE do that?), and my desperate family is simply existing rather than actually living. And before you say anything, yes, I know that there are families out there really, really struggling with a lack of support, and I am not discounting their situations at all. I am responding to the painting with a broad brush that is going on here. If Autism Speaks and other like-minded organizations want to pad the numbers for their autism crisis with the existence of people like me, they really ought to do a better job of actually acknowledging the lived reality of people like me. They ought to do a better job of showing the full spectrum of experience, challenge, and possibility. Of course, treating people like human beings doesnt do quite as much for fundraising as invoking the tragedy motif. But invoking the tragedy motif doesnt exactly do a whole lot for human beings either. autismspeaks.org/news/news-item/autism-speaks-washington-call-action
