Trinidad - our first Caribbean Island! Well yes – I was a bit nervous yesterday morning... our flight from Mabaruma (English Guyana) to the Caribbean Island of Trinidad, home of the Steel Pan Bands, Calypso and Soca music, was the first long water crossing for us. After we depart at sunrise (5.42am local time) from Maburama, we needed to fly 31nm (57km) / 30 minutes over uninhabited jungle before flying apparently never-ending 108nm (200km) / 1 hour 44 minutes over the Caribbean Sea. We went with a nice tail wind up to 5.500ft because of some low clouds and up to 10,000ft fast towering Cumulonimbus clouds. Si I had to fly zig-zag around these clouds. As then the wind suddenly came only from the side, I had to steer with all my strength to keep the direction A little frightening feeling when we reached finally the South coast of Trinidad and a next set of dark, huge many miles high towering Cumulonimbus clouds just few miles east of the airport threatened us to reach the airport before us. But somehow this huge weather system remained surprisingly in one spot and we arrived safe after flying a next 33nm (61km) / 33 minutes over Trinidad at Piarco International Airport. A few hours later, these clouds unloaded there moister in a huge thunderstorm and heavy rain.
