Trinidad and Tobago Newsday CAPE schols next month Wednesday, August 21 2013 News on the recipients of scholarships based on results of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exam (CAPE) should be made public by the second week in September. Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh said up to Monday the ministry was in touch with the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) to get data which the ministry’s team would analyse. Based on this, names would be sent to the inter-ministerial scholarship committee and by the second week of September information made public. Gopeesingh said 93 percent of CAPE students got Grades I to V. On the recent Caribbean Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) results, he said there was improved performances in 11 subject areas and a ten percent improvement in Language Arts. “There was a small improvement in students passing five subjects or more,” he said. There was a slight improvement in Mathematics, but CXC said performance in this subject remained “below average.” Gopeesingh said this was a concern for the wider Caribbean. “Our country did better than the other countries but there is room for tremendous improvement,” he said. TT achieved close to 42 percent passes while the rate for the region was 37 percent. He said the ministry continue to work in school districts to address this.
