Trip Report: Lincoln Woods This weekend we went bouldering at Lincoln Woods, RI. The weather was reported to be atrocious with thunderstorms, but the sun was out when we woke up and we took the risk. Turns out our risk was well worth it, since we ran into only approximately ten minutes where the air chilled a tad and thunder could be heard. Then it went right back to sunshine. This was our first time at Lincoln Woods. The promise of crimp climbs, safe landings, and easy top outs lured us in. One thing people will love about this climbing area is that all the approaches are super easy. They are all flip flop safe. In fact, you can pull the car right up to most of them. The landings are super safe. Most of them were completely flat ground landings. The most “dangerous” ones were just another rock you could easily place a crash pad over. All the routes we did had very friendly top outs as well. Lincoln Woods has every grade from a VO to a V13/V14, but it is an amazing place for beginners. We do not say this to discourage hard climbers, because there are plenty of hard grades. However, there are many VOs and V1s that will build up the confidence of a beginner. There are slab boulders and vertical boulders with easy grades and very easy top outs. For those who have a hard time with overhangs, or are scared of going to the top, these routes will still be no problem. Some of them were very low boulders that were about ten feet high. It is great for a beginner who might be intimidated in other outdoor boulder spots. If you can climb harder grades, there were some very interesting ones with cool moves. There were confidence building ones with only on hard move, and then the ones that were hard each move. Again, everyone can appreciate how nice the landings were. Lincoln Woods seems like an awesome place to spend a relaxed day or to hit some boulders after work. It is a state park that has a beach and BBQ areas with picnic tables and grills. There were people swimming, fishing, running, bouldering, and having family days around the grill. It is a very chill, mellow location. It was so nice to get in a lot of routes because the distances were short and the hikes were probably not even something that could be considered a hike. It was more like a two minute stroll through some trees and you are at the next spot. The rock is said to be granite, though it didn’t really look like the granite we were used to. People who are really particular about rock type might find it is not a high quality. However, it wasn’t too sharp. We left with some skin. It had some nice holds. Nothing broke off our climbs, though we did hear a story about a hold ripping off that day from someone else. It seemed like decent enough rock. The bottom line was we had a lot of fun. We sent a lot, got some flashes, got some cool pictures, and had a great day. The temps were nice, the sun stayed out, and the routes were fun.
