Trip Report November 23, 2014 Arrived at the dam around 6:30am to watch an orange sunrise over the Susquehanna River, along with a pretty cold breeze. As the sun came up the eagles were out and about looking for their Sunday breakfast. We had eagles but very low light, making it difficult to catch the action. Finally the sun peaked over the hills and a new day was born. Only one small generator was operating all day long. George, a frequent visitor to the dam, counted around 35 eagles contently sitting on the rocks across the river. Another dozen or so were sitting high in the trees above the parking lot. I am pretty sure they were people watching??? The eagles would sit and watch all the visitors and then suddenly they would dart at high speeds down to the river to catch a fish they saw from their perch. This happened on and off all day long. Lots of good fishing events!!! The fishing activity all happened very close to the the rivers edge which made the show pretty spectacular. Many of the photographers with large fixed lenses actually had problems tracking the eagles since they were so close. This is a problem they dont often encounter. For the rest of us that have smaller or zoom lenses...we jumped for joy. I love the challenge of capturing a super fast eagle as they dive right in front of me. If you blink you most certainly will miss the shot. In summary a very good day. Unfortunately I am pretty sure there are only a few new (non-local) eagles around the dam right now. Usually this time of year brings many eagles from the North because their food supply dwindles during the cold weather. What will happen in the coming weeks is anyones guess. Last year was also unusual and I think I can safely say that weather conditions dictate how many visiting eagles we will have this year. Lets hope for the best, but be content with those who choose to live here all year round. Hope this report helps you. Who knows what next week will bring. Dave
