Trip Report: Turks & Caicos Explorer II – Turks & Caicos Islands – September 20-27, 2014 Divers who love and appreciate the little things in life are sure to find great satisfaction in some macro diving while aboard TCEXII. The vast landscape underwater is magical to witness in all its colorful glory, but how often do you take the time to scan the nooks and crannies of coral heads to discover the miraculous beauties that camouflage themselves there? One of our personal favorites is the sandy plateau at the top of the reef on Elephant Ear Canyon where we scour the sand in search of a feisty Pike Blenny or two. These creatures are about the size of your pinky and live in sandy holes; they are super territorial and will change their features considerably to protect their homes. This week’s group leader, Kari Pedersen, brought along her mirror during the dive at Elephant Ear Canyon and put it next to the Pike Blenny she found. The Pike Blenny responds defensively to the image (of himself!) in the mirror, raising its prominent dorsal fin and extending its jaw line. It is definitely an impressive sight to see! This week’s diving was particularly special for Ana Pino who boarded our vessel with only 4 dives under her belt! She happily immersed herself into the scuba dive liveaboard lifestyle and was a joy for the rest of her group and crew to see as she marveled at all the amazing animals she encountered. TCEXII wishes Ana and the rest of Kari’s group many more fantastic dives!
