Trip to town was hmmm....interesting! Yes thats the word in looking for. Okay from the beginning. Luna my dear horse has made a pig out of herself and eaten lots of the almost 6 foot tall grass we have. Great! Tall lush grass except for one small problem-highly acidic soil. Now the grass looks great and has lots of nutrients except it is low in salt and calcium, magnesium and several of the b vitamins but high in complex carbohydrates. Sound confusing? Well its not really but I will sum it up like this. Imagine eating McDonalds Cheeseburgers and fries for weeks on end. Yes your getting calories but not nutrition. Now when we had cattle we had a name got this-it was called grass tetny. As much as I love this country I am in there are very few people that are versed in large animal husbandry. They buy hay brought in from elsewhere, give the latest supplements for a shiny coat and healthy hooves but other than that they really have no clue, bless there hearts. I went around and visited a few of those horse people while at Homer and was met by blank stares. A trip to the feed store resulted in much the same so off to the pharmacy. Bingo!!!!! The pharmacist was terrific! He listen to my description of what I needed and why without staring off into space with eyes glazed over! When I was finished our search began, I might add he told me that he was impressed that someone who is not a chemist understood there is a difference in magnesium citrate, nitrate and carbonate. Anyways Im getting off track but we found the needed supplements and all that was lacking was the calcium. After much thought he says how about Tums! Well duh, yes!!!! So finished the errands get home start measuring out the ingredients for Lunas Elixer and take it to her-but I forgot the tums. Thinking I could put some grain in the tub then crush the tums to hide them but it didnt work out quite like planned. Turns out Luna loves tums. Not just okay I will eat a couple to humor you like but more along the lines of I am taking the bottle and emptying a quarter of its contents in my mouth kind of like! So here I was in the pasture wrestling a bottle of tums from a horse who really was objecting to giving them up. Finally got them away from her and shoved them in my pocket. Ok for those of you who think horses are cute docile animals who for the most part are-do not expect a thin piece of fabric from hindering a horse from her tums! I got away with the tums but she got away with my pocket. Oh and yes she is already feeling much better but not sure if it was the supplements or her happy little escapades with the tums-I swear she was laughing at me! :)
