Along with academic, athletic and club events, college opportunities are opening up. Carson-Newman is now offering a new AA in Liberal Arts. Enrolling in this degree program will allow eligible students to use the Tennessee Promise Scholarship. This scholarship will be worth the same amount as it would be if the student was attending a two-year college. This is roughly $3,900. Carson-Newman would also like to remind students that they are automatically considered for Merit-Based Scholarships when applying for admission to the university. They are now accepting applications for the 2015 academic term, and an application promotion is currently running where students may apply online for free. Walters State has recently started a new program called the Walters State Promise Scholarship Program. This allows Walters State to guarantee scholarships to students who meet certain academic requirements. After applying for admission, students may begin applying for three different scholarships offered to graduating seniors. The first scholarship is titled the Senators Scholars and includes $1,000 per semester. Students must have a minimum 3.7 high school GPA and 26 national or state ACT score by the fall semester starting date to apply for this scholarship. Beginning in fall of 2015, this scholarship will be rewarded to graduating seniors. Another scholarship available to recipients of the Senators Scholars Scholarship is the Senators Scholars Dual Enrollment Award. Any student who meets the criteria for a Senators Scholar and has at least12 institutional earned hours of college credit with a 3.0 college GPA will be awarded $500 per semester for four consecutive semesters. Walters State is offering the Senators Dual Enrollment Achievement Award. This is also based around completing 12 institutional hours of college credit with a 3.0 college GPA before enrolling for the fall semester in 2015. In addition to a 2.75 GPA and full-time enrollment, students are also required to participate in 40 hours of institutional work per semester. If students meet these requirements, they will receive $500 per semester for four continuous semesters. Although there are an abundance of exciting activities, it is important that students keep their eyes on the prize. Finals will be this week, with exams for 3rd and 4th period on Thursday, Dec. 18 and exams for 1st and 2nd on Friday, Dec. 19. After exams on Friday, students will be dismissed. Best wishes to everyone as they depart for a merry Christmas season.
