" Trophy Handover To Rumung Champions [Yap Sports Council] — On July 9, 2013 at 11:30AM, municipal representatives from Tomil and Rumung met with officials from the Yap Sports Development Office at the Division of Youth Services conference room. The meeting was called for in order to hand over the Yap Games Overall Municipal Champion Trophy to this year’s municipal champs: Rumung. It was planned that the Yap Games Overall Municipal Champion Trophy would be handed over to this year’s municipal winner at the Closing Ceremony for the 2013 Yap Games; but due to miscommunication, the Trophy was not brought in time for the handover. The belated handover was finally scheduled via email between the above-mentioned parties, in order to hand over the Yap Games Overall Municipal Champion Trophy. Paul Lane and Larry Uwelur from the Sports Office met with John Chiniyinug (with his son Caleb) and Vit Foneg, representing Tomil, and Pius You and Ted Rutun representing Rumung—with Vit Foneg bringing the Trophy. Tomil has been the Municipal Champions in the Yap Games for two consecutive years—a winning streak they’ve kept since the Yap Games’ inception two years ago. Until now; with Rumung winning the most gold AND medals in a sudden upset, the “Forbidden Island” Municipality has claimed the title—and trophy—of Municipal Champion for the 2013 Games. During the meeting, Senator Rutun and Director Lane discussed Yap’s preparations for next year’s Micro Games and plans for a “Yap Youth Games”, among other things, before the Handover took place. John Chiniyinug, representing two-time winning Tomil, handed over the Trophy to Rumung, as represented by Pius You. The Yap Games Overall Municipal Champion Trophy is awarded to the winning Municipal team for each Yap Games—and if the same team wins in three consecutive years, they get to keep the Trophy. Tomil would have kept the Trophy if they had won this year; but they’ve lagged behind Gagil—the expected Champions this year—for most of the Games. But in one single day—the last day of the Games—Rumung shot up the Medal Count, leading by 43 Gold Medals and 56 overall medals. Congratulations to Rumung, the new Municipal Champion! Next year will be the Micro Games, scheduled to start later in July 2014; before that, a Yap Youth Games is planned for the timeslot in June, for kids 17 and under.
