‘Tropical Cyclone Ian’ first emerged as a threat on Monday 6 – 2014, when it was upgraded from a tropical depression to a cyclone. On that day the National Operations Centre was activated. A State of Emergency was declared for Vava’u and Ha’api in Tonga on 11 January. A New Zealand Air Force P3 Orion was dispatched to conduct an aerial survey of the damage to the Ha’apai Islands Group. On 14 January over 1,000 buildings had been damaged and there were fatalities.
